Thailand will host its third Miss Universe pageant, the 2018 Miss Universe, at Bangkok’s Impact Arena on 17 December.
Tourism and sports minister Weerasak Kowsurat said some of the 95 contestants had already arrived in Thailand, with all expected to arrive by 2 December after which a charity auction dinner would be held. They would then head off to beauty camps in Chiang Mai, Lampun, Krabi, Samut Sakon, Suphan Buri and Pattaya, where they will get to experience Thai culture firsthand through participation in rural community activities.
The 2018 Miss Universe pageant will begin at 7 am Bangkok time so it can be broadcast live to the US for primetime viewing. It will also air to some 170 other countries. American comedian and TV personality Steve Harvey will return as host.
For the first time in the pageant’s history, a transgender contestant will be among the bevy of beauties vying for the coveted Miss Universe crown – Miss Spain, Angela Ponce.
Thailand has hosted two previous Miss Universe pageants, in 1992 and 2005. The 2018 Miss Universe will be the 67th edition of the pageant.
