Police in Chiang Mai are taking after-work language classes in English and Chinese to improve their communication skills, with the tourist high season coming.
Hang Dong Police Station in the northern Thai province is providing the courses for over 100 police officers, who attend two-hour classes in their off-duty time. After 20 hours of classes, they must pass an evaluation test for course completion.
Ranging in rank from Police General to Police Corporal, the officers are learning conversational skills and essential phrases. For many of them it’s an opportunity to brush up on their English skills, but when it comes to Chinese they’re beginners.
Said one officer: “We needed to help them [tourists and residents in Chiang Mai]… so they are confident in us and love Thai police.”
