After top-placed Singapore, Thailand has been ranked the second most Muslim-friendly travel destination among non-Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, in the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2018.
Coming third after Thailand was the United Kingdom, while the Top 10 rankings of 4th through 10th went to (respectively) Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong (5th equal), South Africa, Germany, France and Australia.
Thailand’s improved ranking to second was attributed to the ongoing efforts by the kingdom’s tourism sector to broaden the availability of Halal restaurants and promote the destination to Muslim travellers.
Retaining the number one spot on the list of Top 10 OIC destinations was Malaysia, with the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia in joint second and Turkey next.
The Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2018 covers 130 destinations.
The global Muslim travel market is expected to continue its growth, to hit USD 220 billion (THB 7.059 trillion) in 2020.
